The 58 ft Roughwater was built at the CHB Yard, Chung Hwa Boatworks, Taiwan, using an existing commercial trawler hull mold, which was utilized for commercial fishing trawler fleets in the area. Less than a dozen were built during the production run and they rarely are seen on the market.
Edwin Monk was the naval architect who designed the 58. The United States was in the.midst of its first major fuel crisis, and Monk designed the 58 to move a lot of boat with little cost. Maximum fuel efficiency and long range even by today standards, Big Whiskey's Detroit 6-71 is a naturally aspirated 2 stroke diesel that purrs and can run for days. The original tanks were cast iron and obviously problematic. Her fuel tanks have been upgraded to Monel, and are in excellent condition.
The hull is heavily laid up since it is a commercial hull. In 1978, engineers did not have the composite design tools of today so the fiberglass hulls of this era are overly built.
